Each short chapter is form the point of view of either Rose, her father, Neddy her brother the Troll Queen or the Whiter Bear. She travels North towards the enchanted castle to right the wrong she had done with the bear unknowingly. Edith Pattou’s epic story is partly inspired by the old Norwegian fairy tale ‘East o’ the Sun and West o’ the Moon’, though readers will also recognise elements of the more familiar ‘Beauty and the Beast’. Take my ticket for Saturday, because I bought it in denial of the massive probability that I wouldn’t be able to travel the 200+ miles by public transport after work on a Friday night from my tiny and relatively remote corner of the world, which is of course true.Everything is so neatly tied up at the end of North Child, but I had started to wonder about Rose’s daughter, and basing a story on her,’ Edith explains, ‘It was while I was thinking about the book that I had an epiphany moment! It is an adaptation of an old Norwegian folk tale entitled " East of the Sun and West of the Moon" and was a 2003 ALA Top Ten Best Book for Young Adults.

Seeing the same friendly faces vending at these events – and many more in posts online – brought home how much I love being a part of this hardworking, creative, clever and caring wool tribe. The plan for tomorrow though is wrapping, parcelling and knitting, interspersed with bouts of decking the, ahem, halls. She also makes friend with a being named Tuki the son of the cook who teaches her some of his language. Since then Edith has published two highly acclaimed fantasy novels in the United States: Hero’s Song, an International Reading Association Young Adult’s Choice, and Fire Arrow, a Booklist Top Ten Fantasy Novel of the Year.

The quietly spoken Pattou, who must have been asked about this so many times, still enthuses about the effect it had on her as a child growing up in Chicago. This time the old Scottish tale of the stolen bairn and the sidh is her inspiration, another female centred story in which a determined mother rescues her baby from the fairies. I also liked all the additional background detail included in the book, with snippets on map-making, weaving and Nordic/Inuit culture etc, which added an extra layer of interest. Summary: A beautiful retelling of East of the Sun, west of the Moon that plunges us headlong into the world of Norwegian folklore and magic. Using the dresses as currency and by finding friends along the way she battles terrifying seas and hostile landscapes until she reaches her destination.

I’ve been very lucky with my Christmas presents this year; my family know me very well so everything I received is guaranteed to be worn, used, read and enjoyed constantly. It was very satisfying to arrange my precious circular needles in this beautiful chintz needle wrap by Ericka Eckles, which is now in constant use and making me happy with its mustard-gold roses. Its lengthiness could discourage reluctant readers while its fundamental weaknesses may irritate stronger readers. She is the author of two highly acclaimed fantasy novels in the US, “Hero’s Song” in the Songs of Eirren series, an International Reading Association Young Adult’s Choice, and “Fire Arrow”, a Booklist Top Ten Fantasy Novel of the Year. When Rose gets homesick the white bear takes her home where she is allowed to stay for one month as long as she doesn't tell her family about her experiences with the white bear especially her mother. Rose feels out of place in her family, despite her love for them and her home; she can never live up to the standard set by her dead sister Elise, and is consumed by un-east-like wanderlust and desire for adventure.
