To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Immediately on opening the book you are greeted with the most breathtaking bucolic scene across the endpapers as Grandad and Gramps drive rambling hills in their pink camper van. The illustrations are full of warmth, colour and joy, beautifully echoing the excitement of discovery and adventure. But what our protagonist/narrator most likes to do is to snuggle up with her Grandad and listen to stories if his adventures with Gramps.

Grandad, white, and now balding, recounts their adventures to his young grandchild who hangs on every word. The depiction of a loving, same-sex relationship between Grandad and Gramps, as well as the different ethnicities of the main characters, ensure this wonderfully inclusive book reflects a range of experiences, representative of today’s society. This is a beautiful, sweet, touching and honest story of a tender conversation between a grandad and granddaughter. Waterstones Children’s Book Award Winner and British Book Awards Nibbies Children’s Illustrated Book of the Year 2023!Readers are introduced to a young, brown-skinned, curly-haired protagonist on a visit to their White grandfather's cottage. An effective tool for teaching empathy, and the intergenerational bond at the story's center is a heartstrings puller. The art throughout Grandad's Camper is dashing, the layouts somehow chockablock and yet never too busy.

Every summer, the narrator of this heart-warming tale goes to stay with her grandad in his pretty old cottage by the sea. They will then send a postcard home from Grandad and Gramps on their beach adventure before planning, drafting and editing a sequel for the book where Grandad and the little girl head off on their own campervan adventure. Inspired by these tales, the narrator encourages Grandad to fix up the van, and the two take it for a road trip to the beach. Harry Woodgate (they/them) is a multi-award-winning author and illustrator, whose debut picture book Grandad’s Camper won the British Book Awards Nibbie for Children's Illustrated Book of the Year and the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, was shortlisted for the Polari Prize , and named as an ALA Stonewall Honor Book .Roo loves staying with her grandfather in his cottage by the sea and enjoys listening to his wonderful stories. The book reflects on an aspect of mature gay life, a piercing sense of loss, and in the child, of the possibilities still to be found.

Her favourite pastime, however, is to snuggle up with Grandad while he shares tales of his past adventures with Gramps. Grandad's camper van is hidden away in the garage - now Gramps isn't around any more, the adventures they shared travelling in it just wouldn't be the same.

They will practice writing in the past progressive by creating captions for the photo album and develop their skill at writing questions in role as the little girl by interviewing Grandad about his campervan adventures. This is the story of a small girl who loves visiting her Grandad and rummaging through the artefacts from his travels. It is clear that the love of grandad's life (Gramps)' s a man but the book never feels the need to state this in an overt way, it is lovely how this fact is just a natural part of the story. Spelling Seeds have been designed to complement Writing Roots by providing weekly, contextualised sequences of sessions for the teaching of spelling that include open-ended investigations and opportunities to practise and apply within meaningful and purposeful contexts, linked (where relevant) to other areas of the curriculum and a suggestion of how to extend the investigation into home learning.
